How Song of Earth and Heaven came into being

In the 1990s, a small group of Episcopalians in Austin, Texas, longed for a weekly liturgy that reflected the spiritual liberation and theological transformation they had experienced together over many years. What began as a contemplative Sunday afternoon worship service took root and blossomed into what is now St. Hildegard’s Community, a canonically recognized community of the Episcopal Church.

In 1998, our priest Rev. Judith Liro, musician and composer Mary Truly Ermey, and liturgist Kathleen Burnside collaborated to create our first sung Eucharistic setting, Resurrection. That first Sunday singing it together proved remarkable and empowering. We stood shoulder to shoulder in a circle around the communion table, singing inclusive words birthed from the Spirit—a practice we have cherished for more than 25 years.

Our music and liturgies continued to emerge from the life of our community. Through our monthly feminist theology book group, Servant Leadership School classes, retreats, justice work, personal spiritual practices, and the everyday realities of the world and our lives, we engaged deeply with the Fiery Life of Holy Wisdom within us and among us. These experiences flowed naturally into our worship, inspiring fresh and meaningful liturgies and art.

In honor of our musician Mary Truly Ermey’s wishes before she died in 2022, we have gathered our Eucharistic prayers and community—written songs into a book, Song of Earth and Heaven. Mary wanted us to share this music with others. We are grateful and joyful to do so. May the words and music enliven and awaken you to what the Spirit longs to bring to life within you and your community.
